POEM introduces upgrade package for Contiweb paper roll splicers07/11/2016

Complete overhaul ensures longer service life!

POEM in cooperation with W+D has developed an upgrade package to extend the service lives of Contiweb splicers even further. Great care has been taken to ensure that “typical W+D” components (Bosch Rexroth/Allen Bradley) are installed.

Automatic splicers for paper rolls have been used in envelope manufacturing for more than 30 years. Besides our W+D 191, the splicers from Stork Contiweb (now Goss Contiweb) are quite widespread. For this reason, many older Contiweb splicers are still in use that increasingly cause problems because of the outdated electronics, procurement of spare components and support for the aggregates.

For this reason, POEM in cooperation with W+D has developed an upgrade package to extend the service lives of Contiweb splicers even further. Great care has been taken to ensure that “typical W+D” components (Bosch Rexroth/Allen Bradley) are installed.

Concretely the main drive motor together with the respective controller and the web tension drive, also with the respective regulator, are rebuilt and the PLC is exchanged as part of the upgrade package. In addition, the cabinet is completely rewired, all relays are exchanged and there is a conversion to a dual channel emergency stop button.

Furthermore, a number of mechanical repairs are performed such as the replacement of the complete pneumatic system. This provides the customer with a completely overhauled aggregate, whereby the existing Contiweb splicer is also replaced immediately by a previously overhauled POEM device to avoid downtime.

The first prototype has been successfully in use on a W+D 202 owned by the Steinmetz Group since October 2015. After the field test for the smaller model (type SE 25 BO 410), the conversion solution for the wide version of the Contiweb splicer has now also been tested successfully and shipped.

“After our two splicers in Jülich were exchanged, we decided to have two more aggregates replaced. We thus not only prevented the perspective decommissioning of four machines, but can also produce even more efficiently thanks to the cost-effective POEM alternative,” says Wilhelm Kirberich, operations manager and authorized representative of BSE Briefumschläge/Steinmetz.
